AT&T, the second largest wireless carrier in the United States, has been around almost as long as there have been telephones. No, I’m not exaggerating!
AT&T was originally the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, one subsidiary of Alexander Graham Bell’s Bell Telephone Company. In 1885, the Bell Telephone Company became the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, which has since been rebranded as AT&T. Over time, AT&T monopolized the phone service industry until the United States government forced the company to break up its monopoly in 1982. Despite the breakup, AT&T remains one of the largest wireless carriers in the US with more than 138 million subscribers.
AT&T is one of the most highly-rated and reliable wireless networks in the United States. A 2017 RootMetrics study ranked AT&T as the second best overall wireless carrier, narrowingly trailing Verizon in four of the five main categories (Reliability, Speed, Data, Call). The same study found that AT&T tied Verizon for first place in Text performance rank.
AT&T’s customers are some of the happiest in the industry, which is sometimes rare in the age of hidden fees, price fluctuations, and data throttling. J.D. Power ranked AT&T #1 in both of its Wireless Purchase Experience Satisfaction Studies in 2017.
Through a series of recent acquisitions, AT&T has been building a solid foundation for the future. In 2014, the company dipped their feet into the TV market when they announced the purchase of DirecTV. Now, AT&T customers can bundle their wireless plan with a DirecTV plan and get big savings.
In recent years, AT&T has continued to grow their company and their network by acquiring companies including Iusacell NII Holdings, helping them expand their coverage in Mexico.
