Google Fi is a Google-owned wireless service that uses the networks of Sprint, Three, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular. Google Fi also provides its cellular data, calling, and messaging services using Wi-Fi, improving your service in areas that may not otherwise be covered.
What makes Google Fi really unique is that it’s designed to automatically connect to Wi-Fi hotspots through a virtual private network (VPN). A VPN will help keep your personal information safe, and it can be especially at risk when you connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots.
Although all this advanced technology may make Google Fi sound rather complicated or advanced, you’ll still find the traditional plans and phones you’re probably familiar with. You can build multi-line plans with various amounts of cellular data. However, Google Fi is unique in that they offer “Bill Protection”, meaning you want be charged extra money if you exceed a certain data threshold.
Google also sells many phones compatible with the Google Fi wireless network. However, if you’re a big iPhone fan, Google Fi probably isn’t the carrier for you because currently only Androids are compatible with the network. If you really love Google products, we’d recommend the Google Pixel, their flagship product.
If you already own an Android phone, it may be compatible on Google Fi’s network. Since the network uses CDMA and GSM technologies, there’s a decent chance it’ll be compatible.
The Google Fi project is still developing, so it’s not available everywhere yet. Google Fi has received tremendously positive feedback so far, so you can expect Google to continue to grow the network.
