Our take

$200 at Cricket buys a 120 Hz Super AMOLED at 1900 nits, IP67, and Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 — the spec sheet that used to require $400.

The Galaxy A36 5G is Samsung's 2025 budget-midrange and a real step up from the A-series tier below it. The display jumps to 120 Hz at 1900 nits peak — bright enough to read in direct sunlight and smooth enough that scrolling matches what you would see on a midrange iPhone. The chip moves from Samsung's own Exynos 1330 to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 on a more efficient 4 nm process, paired with 6 GB of RAM. Charging accelerates to 45W wired, the IP rating jumps from IP54 to IP67 (full submersion in 1 meter for 30 minutes, not just splash resistance), and the back is glass with Gorilla Glass Victus+ instead of plastic. The frame stays plastic to hit the price. At $199.99 outright at Cricket Wireless or about $11 a month over 18 months, this is the spec sheet that used to require a $400 midrange. The cameras are still the weakest part — a 50 MP main, an 8 MP ultrawide, and no telephoto — and the 6 GB RAM is the floor for keeping Android 15 happy under heavy load. But for the first time in this tier, daylight outdoor viewing, smooth scrolling, water resistance, and quick charging all show up at once.

What we love
  • 120 Hz Super AMOLED is a genuine smoothness upgrade — scrolling matches what midrange iPhones and Pixels look like
  • 1900 nits peak brightness is readable in direct sunlight, where the A16/A17's 800 nits washes out
  • IP67 means full submersion in 1 meter of fresh water for 30 minutes — not just splash resistance
  • 45W wired charging is fast — empty to 50 percent in about 30 minutes on a compatible brick
  • Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the back is a genuine glass back, not the plastic of the cheaper A-series
  • Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 on 4 nm is more efficient and quicker than the Exynos 1330 in the A16/A17
What we don't
  • 6 GB RAM is the entry floor for Android 15 — the A17's 8 GB will multitask noticeably better
  • 8 MP ultrawide is still a token camera — sharper than the A17's 5 MP, but no telephoto and digital-only zoom
  • Plastic frame holds the price down but feels less solid than the aluminum on a Galaxy S
  • No wireless charging — at $200 that is normal, but it's still a missing feature
  • No charger in the box — a 45W brick is a separate $25-30 purchase to actually hit the rated speed
  • Samsung is still tight-lipped on the long-term update window for A3-series phones — likely fewer years than the A17

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G

What kind of display does the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G have?
A 6.7-inch Super AMOLED at 2340x1080 with 120 Hz refresh and 1900 nits peak. The combination of 120 Hz and 1900 nits is what cleanly separates this phone from everything in the tier below. Scrolling looks as smooth as on a mid-tier iPhone, animations don't stutter, and outdoor visibility at noon is genuinely usable — not the dim wash-out of the A16 and A17. Color is Samsung's typical Super AMOLED — deep blacks, saturated punch, optional natural mode in settings. For anyone moving from a 60 or 90 Hz phone, the smoothness alone is worth the upgrade.
What kind of camera does the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G have?
A 50 MP main, an 8 MP ultrawide, and a 12 MP selfie. The main is solid in daylight and competitive with $300 midranges. The 8 MP ultrawide is sharper than the A17's 5 MP but still grainier than the main and weak in low light. There's no telephoto, so all zoom past 1x is a digital crop on the main sensor — passable at 2x, mushy at 5x. The selfie is fine for video calls and selfies in good light. There's no real night mode worth bragging about. Treat it as a daylight point-and-shoot with one good lens, not a camera kit.
What is the battery life of the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G?
5000 mAh on the more efficient 4 nm Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. A day and a half on light to moderate use is realistic, a full day on heavy use. Charging is 45W wired — empty to 50 percent in about 30 minutes on a 45W brick, full in about 75 minutes. No wireless charging at this tier. The 5 nm-to-4 nm efficiency bump and the slightly heavier chip work out roughly even on endurance — battery life is on par with the A17, with much faster top-ups.
What processor does the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G use?
Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 on a 4 nm process, paired with 6 GB of RAM. Quicker and more efficient than the Exynos 1330 in the A16/A17 — app launches feel snappier, and sustained workloads (gaming, navigation, video record) heat up the chassis less. The 6 GB RAM is the catch — entry-level for Android 15, where 8 GB is becoming the recommended floor. In practice this means apps will get evicted from memory more on the A36 than on the A17 with its 8 GB. For light to moderate use the chip is the right call. For heavy multitaskers the RAM ceiling will bite.
How much storage does the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G have?
128 GB of internal storage. UFS 2.2 — slower than the UFS 3.1 in $400+ midranges, fine in normal use, slightly slow on big app installs. After Android 15 and Samsung's preinstalls, around 102 GB is free at first boot. A 256 GB tier exists in some markets but is harder to find on U.S. carrier shelves. No microSD slot on this generation.
What kind of speakers does the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G have?
Stereo speakers — bottom-firing main plus the earpiece — a step up from the A16/A17's single bottom speaker. Loud and clear, decent stereo separation when held horizontally for video, slightly thin in the low end. Not flagship-quality, but a real improvement over the budget-A line and on par with $400 midranges.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G support fingerprint or face unlock?
In-display optical fingerprint sensor and 2D face unlock from the front camera. The optical reader is fast and reliable for daily unlocking; it's a step behind the ultrasonic readers in the Galaxy S line for accuracy in cold or dry hands. Face unlock is camera-based, not the secure depth-camera kind — fine for unlocking the phone, not for banking app authentication.
Is the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G water-resistant?
IP67. Rated for submersion in 1 meter of fresh water for 30 minutes — a meaningful jump from the A16/A17's IP54 splash rating. Drops in a sink, a toilet, or a shallow pool are survivable. Salt water and pressurized streams (a power washer, a deep-pool dive) are still off the table. For a $200 phone this is the IP rating you would expect on a $500 midrange.
