Should you actually get the Google Pixel 8a?

Our takeEditorial
The Google Pixel 8a 128 GB is one of the strongest value propositions in Android right now. Seven years of guaranteed updates — the same commitment given to the $1,099 Pixel 9 Pro XL — at $499 is remarkable on its own. Add the full Google computational photography suite, a 120 Hz OLED display at 2,000 nits, IP67 water resistance, and compact 6.1-inch dimensions, and the 8a competes well above its price bracket. The tradeoffs are real: 18W charging is slow, there is no telephoto lens, and Tensor G3 is not a benchmark leader. But for a user who prioritizes camera quality, long-term software support, and clean Android, the Pixel 8a is the most sensible Android phone under $500. Highly recommended.

The Optimist
“Can you BELIEVE this?! The Pixel 8a gives you SEVEN YEARS of updates, a 120 Hz OLED display, Tensor G3 with Magic Eraser, Best Take, Night Sight — the FULL Google AI camera experience — for FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE DOLLARS?! That is the price of a nice dinner for two and somehow also the price of one of the best camera phones in the entire mid-range market! Google is practically giving this away! Your $499 Pixel 8a takes photos that will embarrass your friend's $800 Android. Compact 6.1 inches for people who have NORMAL-SIZED hands! IP67 water resistance! Google Fi pricing starts at $499! This is the absolute best value in Android smartphones right now and I will not be taking questions. Buy. The. 8a.”

The Cynic
“The Pixel 8a: Google's annual proof that 18W charging is completely acceptable and we should all be grateful. For $499 in 2024, charging your phone at the speed of a 2019 budget phone is a bold choice, Google. Bold! The Tensor G3 is technically a 4 nm chip but manages to run warm in ways that Snapdragon-equipped phones at the same price don't. No telephoto lens either, so you're doing Super Res Zoom which is Google's polite way of saying 'we cropped and sharpened it and hoped you wouldn't notice.' Eight gigs of RAM will be fine for three years and then slightly not fine. And once again: no headphone jack, no SD card. The AI features are genuinely excellent, I concede. But $499 for 18W charging in 2024 is aggressively, defiantly mid.”

Our take

The Google Pixel 8a 128 GB brings Google's Tensor G3 processor and flagship-grade AI camera features to a compact 6.1-inch phone at $499, with seven years of guaranteed updates included.

The Google Pixel 8a is Google's mid-range champion for 2024, delivering a camera experience and software feature set that competes well above its $499 price point. Powered by the Tensor G3 processor on a 4 nm process with 8 GB of RAM, it runs Google's full suite of AI photography tools — Magic Eraser, Best Take, Night Sight, Real Tone, and more — on a genuinely affordable device. The 6.1-inch OLED display peaks at 2,000 nits and runs at 120 Hz, two features that were previously reserved for flagship Pixel phones.

The rear camera pairing of a 64 MP main sensor and 16 MP ultrawide delivers solid performance across daylight and low-light conditions. Computational photography from Tensor G3 elevates both cameras significantly beyond what their raw megapixel counts might suggest. The 13 MP front camera handles selfies and video calls competently. At 6.1 inches and 188 grams, the 8a sits in a comfortable mid-size form factor that larger-phone fatigue sufferers will appreciate.

The Pixel 8a receives seven years of OS, security, and feature updates — identical to the Pro lineup — which makes it an exceptional value at the $499 price point. Available from Google Fi starting at $499, and Verizon from $549.99 (with certified pre-owned options at $258.99), it is one of the best-value Android phones currently on the market for buyers who prioritize camera quality, software longevity, and a pure Android experience.

What we love
  • Seven years of OS, security, and feature updates at a $499 price — exceptional long-term value
  • Tensor G3 enables full Google AI photography suite including Magic Eraser and Best Take
  • 120 Hz OLED display reaching 2,000 nits — not typical at this price
  • Compact and manageable 6.1-inch form factor at 188 grams
  • IP67 water and dust resistance included
  • Wide carrier availability including Google Fi, Spectrum Mobile, Verizon, and US Cellular
What we don't
  • No headphone jack
  • No expandable storage — 128 GB is the only configuration
  • 18W wired charging is modest — slower than many sub-$500 competitors
  • Tensor G3 trails Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 and similar chips in sustained performance benchmarks
  • 8 GB RAM is sufficient but less future-proof than the 12–16 GB found on flagships

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Google Pixel 8a

What kind of display does the Google Pixel 8a have?

The Google Pixel 8a 128 GB features a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 1080 x 2400 pixel resolution and a pixel density of 430 PPI. The display runs at up to 120 Hz for smooth scrolling and responsive touch input, and HDR support is included. Peak brightness reaches 2,000 nits, which is notably high for a mid-range device and ensures outdoor readability in most lighting conditions. The 6.1-inch size positions the Pixel 8a as a compact flagship alternative for users who prefer a smaller, easier-to-hold device.

What kind of camera does the Google Pixel 8a have?

The Google Pixel 8a 128 GB features a dual rear camera system with a 64 MP main sensor and a 16 MP ultrawide lens. Google's Tensor G3 processor applies computational photography including Night Sight, Real Tone, Magic Eraser, Best Take, and Photo Unblur to both cameras. Despite the absence of a dedicated telephoto lens, Google's Super Res Zoom uses the 64 MP sensor to produce quality telephoto-equivalent crops. The front camera is a 13 MP sensor for selfies and video calls. Video recording is supported across all cameras.

What is the battery life of the Google Pixel 8a?

The Google Pixel 8a supports 18W wired fast charging via PD3.0, as well as 7.5W wireless charging via Qi-compatible chargers and bypass charging for extended plugged-in use. The 18W wired speed is on the slower side for a 2024 device but is functional for overnight or desk charging. Bypass charging is a useful addition for gaming sessions, allowing the phone to run off power without cycling the battery. Google has not disclosed the precise battery capacity publicly for the Pixel 8a.

What processor does the Google Pixel 8a use?

The Google Pixel 8a 128 GB is powered by Google's Tensor G3 processor, built on a 4 nm process and paired with 8 GB of LPDDR5 RAM. Tensor G3 is the same chip found in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, bringing the full Google AI and machine learning feature set to the 8a including on-device speech processing, real-time translation, and the full computational photography suite. While Tensor G3 trails Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in raw benchmark performance, it handles everyday smartphone tasks, streaming, photography, and moderate gaming without issue.

How much storage does the Google Pixel 8a have?

The Google Pixel 8a ships with 128 GB of internal UFS storage and does not support microSD card expansion. For a $499 device, 128 GB is a reasonable allocation for most users — sufficient for a large app library, social media, and a moderate photo and video collection. Users who shoot extensive video or store large music libraries offline should be mindful of the fixed storage limit and consider cloud backup solutions like Google One.

What kind of speakers does the Google Pixel 8a have?

Yes, the Google Pixel 8a 128 GB includes stereo speakers. Google's speaker tuning on the 8a delivers clear, balanced audio that punches above its price point for a mid-range device. The stereo separation is evident during landscape video playback and speakerphone calls. There is no headphone jack; wired audio requires a USB-C adapter or Bluetooth headphones.

Does the Google Pixel 8a support fingerprint or face unlock?

Yes, the Google Pixel 8a 128 GB includes an under-display fingerprint sensor for primary biometric authentication. Face unlock is also available using the front camera as a secondary option. The under-display fingerprint sensor provides fast, secure unlocking and is used for payments via Google Wallet, app authentication, and screen unlock. Performance of the sensor is generally fast and reliable under normal conditions.

Is the Google Pixel 8a water-resistant?

The Google Pixel 8a 128 GB is rated IP67 for dust and water resistance. The IP67 rating means it is fully dust-tight and can withstand immersion in fresh water up to 1 meter deep for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529 standard conditions. IP67 is slightly less stringent than the IP68 ratings found on the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL (which are tested to 1.5 m), but it provides solid protection against accidental splashes, rain, and brief submersion. Google's warranty does not cover water damage regardless of the IP rating.
