Set Up Cellular On Apple Watch

1 min read

Many of the Apple Watch’s functions require an iPhone to work properly. While the Apple Watch can still be a great tool despite requiring an iPhone nearby, it’s not your only option.

An Apple Watch also comes with the ability to connect with cellular data on its own. Linking your Apple Watch to a cellular network can open up a whole new range of possibilities for what you can use your smartwatch for.

  1. Open the Watch App on your iPhone.
  2. Select the My Watch tab.
  3. Tap Cellular.
  4. Select Set Up Cellular.
  5. Follow the instructions that correspond to your cellular carrier.

Why this works:

With a cellular data connection, your Apple Watch can complete many tasks by itself that would otherwise require an iPhone. If your Apple Watch has cellular data, you can make phone calls and send messages even when you’re away from your iPhone.

While the Apple Watch is already powerful without cellular data, investing in a data plan for your Apple Watch will make your device more versatile than ever.

Pro tip:

  • Before you start this process, make sure your Apple Watch is running the latest WatchOS update and your iPhone is running the latest iOS update.
  • Not all cellular plans are compatible with Apple Watch. Even if they are, you many need to pay extra to ensure your cell phone plan is compatible with your Apple Watch.
  • Your Apple Watch’s cellular plan must be provided by the same carrier as your iPhone’s data plan.
