Is The Google Pixel 4a Waterproof? Here’s The Truth!

You're thinking about purchasing the new Google Pixel 4a, but you want to learn more about it. These days, most consumers are concerned about water-resistance, as water damage is one of the most common reasons why phones need to be repaired or replaced. In this article, I'll explain whether or not the Google Pixel 4a is waterproof!

Is The Google Pixel 4a Waterproof?

The Google Pixel 4a doesn't have an ingress protection (IP) rating, so it's unknown how resistant it is to moisture or dust. Ingress protection ratings are the standard way to measure how well phones can resist liquids and dust. Since the Google Pixel 4a doesn't have a rating, we recommend keeping it away from liquids as much as possible.

However, just because the Google Pixel 4a doesn't have a rating, that doesn't mean the phone is bad. Not getting an IP Rating lowers the price for consumers, one of the main draws of the Pixel 4a.

What Is An Ingress Protection Rating?

An Ingress Protection Rating tests how safe an electronic device is from dust, dirt, and moisture. Using an IP Rating is more ideal than saying “waterproof,” or “water-resistant,” because it gives the consumer more specific information. Terms like “waterproof” are vague and often cause more confusion, but the Ingress Protections Rating system is easy to understand.

The ratings consist of two numbers, sometimes followed by a letter. The first number indicates the level of protectiveness against solids like dust and sand. The second number denotes your device's protection from water and other liquids.

Currently, the highest possible rating for solid protection is 6, with a 9 rating for liquid protection being the highest.

The industry standard for smartphones is IP68, which is the rating earned by the iPhone 11 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S20, and Google Pixel 5. A rating of IP68 generally indicates a phone is completely resistant to dust and can withstand immersion in 1.5 meters of water for up to thirty minutes.
