How To Switch From Straight Talk To Another Carrier

You're thinking about switching cell phone carriers, but you're not sure what the best way to go about this is. It may seem complex and overwhelming, but we're here to help. In this article, I'll show you how to switch from Straight Talk to another carrier.

Why Switch From Straight Talk To Another Carrier?

There are many reasons to switch from Straight Talk to another carrier. For example, their service may not be great in your area, or maybe you think you're paying too much for your current plan. Switching your carrier can help you save money and get better coverage.

What Networks Will Give Me Better Coverage?

MVNOs, or mobile virtual network operators, like Straight Talk piggyback off of larger carrier networks. In this case, Straight Talk combines the three largest networks, Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T. If you're not getting very good coverage, it may be that your area isn't well covered by these networks, or you may need a phone that is compatible with more of Straight Talk's towers.

If you're looking for a carrier to give you better reception in your area, use our coverage map to compare nationwide coverage between carriers. You can easily the map filter by carrier, at the bottom of the page.

Find A Plan

Before you can switch from Straight Talk, you need to know which data plan you want to subscribe to. You can use our cell phone plan comparison tool to find the one that's right for you. You can filter it by carrier, price, lines, and more.

Unlock Your Straight Talk Phone

It's possible that you might need to unlock your Straight Talk phone, which will allow you to use the device on other networks. To do so, you have to call Straight Talk customer service at 1-877-430-2355. They'll give you a code that you can enter on your device to carrier unlock it.

IMEI Number

You might need your phone's IMEI, or international mobile equipment identity, to check its compatibility with other networks. This is a unique serial number that identifies your phone.

If the steps below aren't compatible with your device, you can always dial #06# to get your IMEI number.

Find IMEI On Android

On an Android device, you can find your unique IMEI number by swiping down from the top of the screen and tapping the gear icon to open Settings. Scroll down until you locate About phone. From here, you should be able to find your IMEI number.

Pick The Right Time To Switch

Don't cancel your Straight Talk plan until the end of your monthly cycle. Once it's cancelled, you should enroll in your new plan. But if you cancel too early, you may lose out on the ability to transfer your phone number and could get charged more for your data cycle, in addition to potential termination fees.

Keep Your Number When You Switch From Straight Talk

You'll need to check with your new carrier to see if and how you can transfer your phone number. Make sure that you don't cancel your old plan until this is completed, or else you won't be able to do the transfer.

Deals When You Switch

Cell phone carriers offer deals to incentivize you to switch. They may even be willing to pay you, which can cover things like activation fees, or help you pay off your contract, if you terminate one early.

For example, when you switch to Verizon, you can get up to $300. With T-Mobile, how much you can save is dependent on a few factors, but you can use this tool to figure it out. AT&T has some great deals on phones when you switch online.
