Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

How many lines count as a family plan?
Most carriers define "family" as 3 or more lines on a shared account. You'll typically see the biggest per-line discounts at 4 lines — the fifth line is often free or deeply discounted.
Are taxes and fees included in the advertised price?
Not always. Big-three carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) often advertise the pre-tax price and add $5–$10 per line in fees. MVNOs like Visible and Mint Mobile include taxes in the sticker price. We list 12-month averages with fees factored in throughout this guide.
Can different people on the plan use different phones?
Yes. Every carrier here supports mixed devices on one account — iPhones, Android phones, and basic phones can all coexist. The plan tier applies to every line; the phone choice is separate.
What happens to hotspot on a family plan?
Hotspot is per-line, not pooled. If a plan advertises 40 GB of hotspot, each line gets 40 GB individually — not 40 GB split four ways. Check whether the hotspot allocation is the same on every line or only on premium tiers.
Can I mix plan tiers across lines on the same account?
A few carriers allow this — US Mobile is the most flexible, letting each line pick its own plan. Most big-three family plans require all lines to be on the same tier to get the group rate. Check before assuming you can put kids on a cheaper tier.
