Why Does My Android Keep Restarting? Here’s The Fix.

Your Android keeps restarting and it’s getting really frustrating. You are in the middle of a text, email, call, or WhatsApp conversation and your LG, Motorola, Google, HTC, Samsung, OnePlus or other Android phone decides that it is going to restart with no warning that it’s going to happen. In this article, I’ll explain why your Android keeps restarting and show you how to fix the problem!

This is one of the most frustrating things that can happen on your Android, because you have no control over it. You have no idea how to keep it from happening, or when it will happen again. Fortunately, there are solutions to this problem, and I’ll walk you through them step-by-step.

Is My Android Broken?

Most of the time, the Android keeps restarting problem is caused by software, rather than hardware. It can be a hardware problem, but you’ll need to follow these steps before you can know for sure:

Have You Installed Any New Apps?

First, have you installed any new apps since this started happening? A lot of times, Androids keep restarting because an app (or a particular app version) is leeching memory. What this means that when you go into a new app, and this app is no longer active, the old one sits there and doesn’t release the extra memory that it needs and/or continues to run at full strength when you are no longer in the app.

Your LG, Motorola, Google, HTC, Samsung, or OnePlus phone has a finite amount of RAM (Random Access Memory) which is what your phone uses to run the Android Operating System and apps. When it is used up, things start misbehaving, and your phone can begin to restart because it can’t function when it’s out of memory.

Uninstall The Offending App

The best way to fix this is to uninstall the offending app. The problem with this is you may not know which app it is that is causing your Android to restart, as not everyone installs one app at a time. You may have installed 15 apps in between noticing the rebooting issue and finding this article. How are you supposed to know which app is causing this?!

The first thing you can do is look in your recent apps list (it will show which apps are currently running, and will not clear on restart) and see if one of the apps in that list is one of the ones that you have installed since the random restarts started. If so, uninstall/update that app. If there is no update to that app and/or you don’t really need that app, simply uninstall it.

If there are a bunch of the new apps in your recent apps list, you have a couple of options. First, you could simply install all of the offending apps and call it a day, but this isn’t necessarily the best course of action, because you may really use a couple of those apps regularly, and you don’t want to get rid of them.

In that case, go into your settings and find the Memory section.

android average memory use

This will show the average memory usage over the past 3/6/12/24 hours depending on how you sort it. If you go to the top right corner (the 3 dots) you can sort by memory usage.

memory usage by android apps

That will show you which apps have used the most memory, a good indicator of which app is causing the random reboots. Bear in mind that this is all memory used, so there will be system apps and apps that you actually use heavily in this list.

Another way to address the Android restarting problem is to use a task killer. This is best if you can’t figure out which app it is, or if you can, and you don’t want to uninstall the app because it is one that you actually use regularly. My favorite is Advanced Task Killer.

If none of this fixes the Android restarting issue, then it is probably an hardware or an operating system issue. If that is the case, then the first step would be to do a factory data reset. This will delete all of your apps and re-install Android, and if that doesn’t fix it, then your device probably has some hardware failure that is causing the restarts.

If this is the case, your options are to go to an authorized repair shop, to contact the manufacturer (if it is still under warranty), make a claim with your insurance company (if you have device insurance), or to purchase a new device.

Android Phone No Longer Restarting

I hope that this was helpful in answering your question the Android keeps restarting problem that had been plaguing your Samsung, HTC, LG, or OnePlus smartphone. Let me know in the comments! If you find a particular app that causes this, please reach out to me, and I will add it to the article for other people whose Android phones keep restarting too.
