Is The iPhone 12 Waterproof? Here’s The Truth!

The iPhone 12 won’t be released until sometime during September 2020, but there’s still so much to look forward to with this model—especially the water resistance feature. So, is the iPhone 12 waterproof? Keep reading to find out!

Is The iPhone 12 Waterproof?

Just like its predecessor, the iPhone 12 has an IP rating of IP68. This means it will be water-resistant when submerged up to six meters in water. However, it's important to keep in mind that water-resistance wears down over time and Apple doesn't cover water damage. Be careful before showing off this party trick!

IP stands for ingress protection. The first number reflects the phone's dust-resistant, while the second number reflects the phone's water-resistance. Dust-resistance is rated from 0–6, and water-resistance is rated from 0–9. Currently, the highest water and dust resistance score a cell phone can receive is IP69K.

Will The iPhone 12 Work Underwater?

While underwater camera technology exists, we’ve never seen it on a cell phone before. However, Apple filed a patent in August 2019 indicating that they're working on making iPhones more functional underwater. Older generations of the iPhone are water-resistant, but the cameras don't work underwater.

What does all of this mean? For now, your iPhone 12 will be fine if you drop it in the sink or use it in the rain. However, until Apple releases an iPhone that is specifically designed to work underwater, we'd avoid trying to use it in the pool.
