What Is The Apple iPhone Upgrade Program? Here’s The Truth!

Wouldn't it be nice to own a new iPhone every year? Apple's iPhone Upgrade Program makes it possible! In this article, I'll break down and explain everything you need to know about this program.

What Is Apple's iPhone Upgrade Program?

Apple's program is essentially an installment plan combined with an early upgrade program. It spreads payments for the new phone over 24 months. At the end of those 24 months, you own the phone.

Customers can upgrade for free after 12 payments. If you choose to upgrade, you're required to trade in your old phone, which then starts the leasing cycle all over again. The cost of your iPhone varies depending on which model select.

When Can I Upgrade?

You can technically upgrade at any time. Even if you haven't had your iPhone for 12 months, you can still upgrade, but you'll have to make 12 month's worth of payments towards your iPhone.

After 12 months, you can upgrade to the newest iPhone for free, but your loan starts over again for the new device. You are also required to return your old iPhone to Apple.

The old iPhone must meet certain standards to be turned in. In addition to powering on and holding a charge, your old iPhone must have a functioning and uncracked display.

Additionally, Activation Lock has to be disabled on your old iPhone. Check out Apple's guide to make sure Activation Lock has been disabled on your iPhone.

Who Is Eligible?

Since you're essentially taking out a loan, there are rules and regulations that apply. To be eligible for the Apple iPhone Upgrade Program, you must be 18 years or older. Apple will use your information to run a credit check. If you have bad credit, then this could affect your ability to qualify for the program.

Where Do I Sign Up?

Does this program sound perfect for you? Here's how you can sign up:

Online Or In Store

You don't have to go to a brick and mortar store to enroll in Apple's iPhone Upgrade Program. Head to Apple's website and select the iPhone you want. Then, select Apple iPhone Upgrade Program as your payment option.

If you prefer, you can always visit an Apple Store and ask a Specialist about the program.

Choose Your Level Of AppleCare+ Coverage

The Apple iPhone Upgrade Program comes with the added benefit of built in AppleCare+ coverage. When you sign up for the iPhone Upgrade Program, you get to decide between standard AppleCare+ or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss costs a little extra (starting around an extra $4 / month).

Provide Your Current Carrier Details

Apple will send you an unlocked iPhone, so it's going to work with your wireless carrier. You may need to provide some information about your wireless carrier when you sign up for the iPhone Upgrade Program.

Back Up Your Data

If this is your first time joining the program, make sure to back up your iPhone before making the switch. This ensures that your information is ready to transfer onto the new device.

Personal Info Needed

Finally, you’ll be asked to provide your Social Security number and date of birth for a credit check. You’ll also need a valid U.S. credit or debit card. If you’re signing up at an Apple Store, you must provide two forms of ID with matching first and last names.

Once approved for the program, you can pick up your new iPhone. If ordered online, your new device can be picked up at your nearest Apple store. They'll hold it there for fourteen days before returning it to stock.
